15th Annual “Race for Grace”

On May 1st 2017, Kentucky Race Track Chaplaincy celebrated the 15th Anniversary of Race for Grace. The featured speakers were retired Hall of Fame racing jockey, Pat Day, and WinStar Farm President and CEO, Elliott Walden, in an interview moderated by former WAVE news anchor, Jackie Hays Bickel. Instrumental in the development of a full-time chaplaincy in 2002, the two men shared racing stories and experiences of the early years of holding chapel services in the recreation building or under a tree on the backside. Churchill Downs Chaplains, Joseph Del Rosario and Dan Hatfield along with Associate Chaplain, Daisy Baez were introduced. Chaplain Doug Eldridge from Turfway Park and Belterra Park in Ohio was also recognized.

This year’s event held a live and silent auction with donated items from numerous supporters. Some of the live auction items included Kentucky Oaks Tickets, New York Yankees Tickets, Indianapolis 500 Tickets, Paintings and Art collectibles. During the event, Robert Clark, a renowned equestrian artist completed a painting for auction of Nyquist, Exaggerator, and Creator, winners of the 2016 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, respectively.

This year’s event raised enough funds to cover over 35% of the annual operating budget for the chaplaincy’s ministry and outreach at Churchill Downs, Turfway Park, Kentucky Downs and Ellis Park in Kentucky, and Belterra Park near Cincinnati, Ohio. These results were wonderful and the chaplaincy is truly grateful for the volunteer support and donor generosity shown by all. KRTC relies completely on non-government donations to support its good work of transforming lives in the name of Jesus Christ.
